If we think we have that machinery under our thumb, remember it is your own pulse you feel. Machinery and automobiles have no heart. Don’t let familiarity breed carelessness on your farm, highways or in your home. It is sad but this type of carelessness prevails within many farm families. The National Safety Council reports . . . drivers in 65 per cent of all fatal accidents in 1960 were less than 25 miles from home. Mechanical failure was a factor in less than 5 per cent of fatal tractor accidents last year. About 40,0 persons drown on farm property each year and falls remain the greatest killer in farm homes. ,..... w It is reasonable to assume that persons involved were familiar with the ir surroundings . .. perhaps too familiar. There are few of us who don’t breathe a sigh of relief and relax when he crosses the county line after a long trip on the road. It is a rare individual indeed that doesn’t become at ease and confident on his tractor at home after helping out his neighbor on a strange one. How many of us have said, “I can go anywhere around my place in tsh'e dark.” or “I know every inch of my pond' because I saw it when it was dry.” Safety requires thought but it requires much more. We must have an acute awareness of .the dangers of our everyday situations and activities. Lets make FAMILY SAFETY AT WORK AND PLAY our living watchword for all of every year.
