Deaths Climb
Virginia traffic deaths for the first half of 1962 climbed to 397, an increase of 7.3 percent above the 370 for the similar period of 1961, Colonel C. W. Woodson, Jr., Chairman of the Governor’s Highway Safety Committee and Superintendent of State Police, announced today.
Noting that traffic volumes, based on gasoline sales, increased about 5.8 percent, Colonel Woodson was unable to give any other explanation for the increase which compares even worse with the 357 for the first half of 1960. Crashes killing more than one person each numbered 37, which saw the deaths of 86 people, as against the 34, which saw 90 deaths during the first six months of 1961. Nationally, deaths are up about 10 percent.
