Some years ago in a former pastorate, I invited members of a certain group who were interested in the widespread problem of alcohol to list reasons why they did not serve nor drink alcoholic beverages. None of the members of the group was religious fanatics but all were interested because of the social pressures of the day. Some of them were members of Alcoholics Anonymous, and others had members of their immedate family who had the “problem”.
After all members of the group had read their reasons for not drinking alcoholic beverages, the following list was selected to be Sprinted in the church bulletin.
1. As a Christian and a church fern ember, I believe that drinking would weaken and make less effective my influence and testimony.
2. The Bible teaches against strong drink.
3. I have seen the devastating effects of liquor in the lives of my father, brother-in-law, and other relatives. Our family suffered because of whiskey and this experience has caused me to hate it.
4. As a child, mother instilled in us the importance of a complete abstainence of whiskey. She con tinually warned, “Never take the first drink.” I have respected her judgement and wishes in this.
5. I believe that drinking would jeopardize my health.
6. I do not like the environment in which liquor usually associates itself. Whiskey and spirituality are not found under the same roof.
There are known to be more than 10,000 alcoholics in our state’s second largest city. More than 1,000 of this number are women. Of course there are many more who have passed over the line of “social drinking” to the state of alcoholism. Not one of these began as an alcoholic nor with the thought of becoming a victim of the appalling disease. Most of them will tell us they began as “social drinkers”.
