been a stormy one. Tlie project was initiated in 1957, but it was not until 1962 that problems of site, finance and Guard strength were ironed out. After the land was donated by Mr. van Roijen the board of supervisors voted the necessary funds and plans were approved by the state and the Department of Defense. Construction was started in June 1963 and the building was completed, at a cost of $285,000, in September. The armory will be the home of Battery A, Sixth Howitzer Battalion, 111th Artillery, Virginia Army National Guard, commanded by Captain Russell R. Tudor with 1st Lt. Robert F. Kube as executive officer. The battery has a strength of 85 enlisted men. At summer camp in July, Battery A received a rating of excellent from the Department of the Army for maintaining a superior average in competition with units from Manassas and Fairfax.
