November Hunting Diary
Weather situation during first half of November, 1965: Rotten! Too clear, too mild, too lovely, to be any good at all! During second half of month: Rotten! Too crisp, too dry, too windy to be any good at all! November 7 was the first November carded hunt, and on that day, ghastly but true, not I one hound was to be found in' the Rappahannock Hunt Kennels. During a spontaneous Saturday night party put on by our pack, they ALL dug out and took off to the Park a-1 chasin’ a deer. To save the day for the assembled hunters, Mr. Clifford Weyland very kindly brought out his excellent private pack of hounds. His dogs worked Fielding Mt. conscientiously and energetically. They showed admirable drive and were entirely honest -- never a babble was heard. However, the very warm afternoon was i jrynducive to nothing but napping, and that is exactly what the foxes were determined to do. Joint-Masters Jim Bill Fletcher and Jack DeBergh guided a sleepy field consisting of Stewart Wells, Carol and Newbill Miller with their son Jay out for his first hunt, (he wasn’t sleepy, you may be sure) Bernie Dahlgren and his buoyant-heeled “WantNot” ridden by his firm rider, Miss Taylor; Wade Wallihan Massie, Mary Jamieson, Oliver Durant, Elzy Brown and his son, Oliver, Bobby Gehringer, Butch Eastham.V. and Carroll Shackelford, Captain Bill Tucker on furlough from Puerto'Rico. Saturday, Nov. 13 - Unfortunately, another beautiful day! Temperature between 55 and 60 degrees. Met at Meadow Grove Farm. Stewart Wells’
