County War Veterans

How are Rappahannock County’s war veterans and their families making out financially? How much did they receive in the past year from the government in the form of cash benefits and services? By virtue of new and expanded benefits voted by Congress, they collected more than in any previous year. According to an estimate based upon a state-by-state breakdown released by the Veterans Administration, vet erans in Rappahannock County and their dependents recelv ed a total of over $137,000 during the fiscal year. It went to some 80 living veterans and families of deceased vetera/is in tile local area. Throughout the State of Virginia, where the overall benefits amounted to more than $152,375,000 in the year, it was equivalent to $1,067 per veteran.

In some communities it amounted to more than this and in others less. In the United States as a whole, where more than $7 billion was spent on veterans programs, the average came to $1,607.
