Winds were so intense that they blew the roof off a large shed at the Gore farm and deposited it several hundred yards away. In one instance the winds blew a two by four with such intensity that it hurled it into the ground. Hie two by four is entrenched so firmly that it cannot be removed.
As the storm came through the area the wind suddenly changed from due south to due north. Residents reported that this sudden shift in wind direction indicated to them that the storm was a tornado.
The storm that afflicted F. T. Valley Saturday will long be remembered. Winds of comparable intensity have not been seen in the County for many years. The scars on the side of Hazel Mountain will be evident for years to come. The damage done to homes and property may take weeks to repair.
Eacapee Apprehended
An escapee from a road work gang enjoyed twelve hours of freedom Friday, August 8. Andrew Paul Toth, 39, serving a six-months sentence, escaped from a road crew on Route 600 near Sperryville at 11:50 Friday. He was apprehended about 11:30 that night just east of Sperryville on Route 211 by Trooper J. B. Willis.
