high quality com silage. Feed value can easily be reduced by 15-30% by cutting at the wrong stage of maturity. Poorly cut, long cut and shredded silage contribute to poorer quality cattle feed. A poor packing job in trench and bunker silos makes poor keeping ability and a high percentage of spoilage.
In order to get the highest feed value from your corn silage, harvest in the hard dough stage of maturity. The grain should be firm to hard, but can still be dented with the finger nail. The kernels on the entire ear should be dented on most varieties. Husks should be brown or turning brown, but most leaves should still be green.
