What reaction do you have when you read that 15 million children between the ages of three and six are already doomed to failure before they reach school, that one in eight children are doomed to mental illness, that one out of every six college students currently have some form of mental illness? These same questions were asked of 300 Educational Supervisors who attended the Virginia Education Association Convention held in Richmond last month.
H. Gerthon Morgan, Director of the Institute for' Child Study at the University of Maryland said that many of these problems are developing in our society because groups that are concerned about human fulfillment, frequently ignore three facts when dealing with children - few people become what they want, potential at an early age cannot readily be seen, and not enough people care. The labeling of a child as a “slow learner”, he said, can often be psychologically damaging and frequently inaccurate. Through such a process, though, a child can readily become what he sees of himself in the eyes of other people.
