An era in the educational history of Rappahannock County comes to an end this week when
two obsolete school buildings will be sold. The school structures aat Sperryville and Washington will go under the auctioneer’s mallet Saturday, closing a chapter which began in 1909. These two buildings were last used in 1967 and the following year the new consolidated facility was opened. Rappahannock County Elementary School contains 30-rooms and houses more than 800 students.
The old Sperryville school was constructed in 1909 and consisted of four rooms. At that time the building faced the Thornton River. Not until 1924 were four more rooms added and in 29 the structure was moved to its present location because new highway construction came too close to the school.
At the beginning of the school term in 1890, seven grades and two years of high school were housed in the four rooms. After the addition of four more rooms, the school offered four years of high school.
A small building was later constructed on the grounds and in recent years were used for a cafeteria and library. This building was formerly the Oakley schoolhouse, tom down and rebuilt here. Another classroom was added to this as increased enrollment required.
In 1950 all high school pupils were transferred to the school in Washington and that consolidated to be Rappahannock County High School. Ten years later a new consolidated high school was built and now serves the entire county.
