Tree Farm Award

Made to Th. Massie

A Tree Farm sign and certificate of membership in the American Tree Farm System in recognition of good forest management has been presented to Thomas B. Massie of Washington, Virginia by retired Chief Forest Warden Raymond M. Johnson on behalf of the Virginia Tree Farm Committee. Mr. Massie received the award for carrying out sound forest management practices on his farm woodland property and for protecting his trees from fire, insects and destructive livestock grazing in accordance with Virginia Tree Farm standards.

In making the award, Mr. Johnson congratulated Mr. Massie for setting a fine example in proper woodland management. “Trees are a crop that can be grown again and again on the same land,” said Mr. Johnson. “That is what Mr. Massie is doing and that is what more landowners must do if we are to meet our increasing demands for forest products and to protect our watersheds and wildlife areas.”

There are now 819 Tree Farms in Virginia with a total forest area of 1,336,961 acres. The Tree Farm System is sponsored by the American Forest Institute with the program in Virginia being administered by Virginia Forests Inc. in cooperation with the Virginia Division of Forestry, VPI Extension Division and the American Forest Institute.
