Dear Editor:
My wife and I wen lucky enough to purchase twenty acres of land in the Castleton area. Our objective is to provide a place of solitude for ourselves as well as have a place for our children to run and play and make noise without inhibiting someone else’s rights.
One of our Sunday chores at Castleton is to collect bottles and cans along the roadside leading to our property. This does not seem too much of a penalty to pay in order to enjoy the beauty of the place. We take these items home and place them in our own trash. This simple chore was compounded on our last visit to Castleton by the sight of a mattress along the road. It is one thing to gather trash but it is another to gather mattresses. Surely the folks who “planted” this item there must have had the “Out of Sight, Out of Mind Principle” in mind. It would have been far simpler to merely remove such an item from one’s bed and place it in one’s back yard. One would therefore suppose that the rationale was to go to the trouble to haul item where someone else could look at it. The Out of Sight, Out of Mind Principle has been carried on by mankind for a long time. It seems we are always leaving something we don’t want • somewhere • for someone more responsible to clean up. And one would suppose that such a principle will continue - but mattresses - that's going a little too far!
