Standards Set for
Motorcycle Helmets
In accordance with legislation enacted by the 1970 General Assembly, standards for helmets required to be worn by operators and passengers of motorcycles have been adopted, according to Colonel H. W. Burgess, Superintendent of State Police. Colonel Burgess said that the law requires that the State Police adopt these standards within one year after enactment of the law and that enforcement begin no sooner than 60 days after filing of the standards.
In stating that September 15, 1970, has been set for the beginning of enforcement of the standards. Colonel Burgess said that since June 26, 1970, the law has required that operators and passengers wear some type of helmet and that this must be. done.
The Virginia standards closely parallel the ANSI Z90.1-1966 ones set by the American National Standards Association, Inc. Any helmet meeting these standards and marked with the ANSI Z90.1*1966 designation is eligible for approval by the State Police. Such helmets are now available. However, Colonel Burgess said that approval must be obtained, usually by the manufacturer, before the helmet can become legal in Virginia and added that approved helmets will be listed and listings available to the public by the State Police before the enforcement date. As a protection to the public, all automotive safety devices must be approved as to quality and effectivenem by the State Police. Colonel Burgees stated further that after September 15, 1970,
