discrimination concepts. Much work was done to encourage oral communication, both listening and speaking. Field trips around the school were conducted in order to work with the children in observation skills and to serve as an introductory to the study ol science. Butter, peanut butter and popcorn were made and appropriately used; a fire truck was brought to the school foi demonstration; and in addition, several people from the community brought to the children information on topics such as health practices, spatter painting, and the highway patrol.
Throughout the entire program parents were invited to attend the activities, but a special program was planned for them on Wednesday, July 15, 1970. On that day the parents rode the school buses to the Rappahannock County Elementary School where they viewed the activities of the children and learned about the program; their reaction was enthusiastic.
Another aspect of the summer activities at the school was a remedial reading program in which 16 children, led by two professional personnel, underwent an intensive three week period of strengthening basic reading skills so that they would be better prepared in the fall for their academic work. These summer activities are just me aspect of Rappahannock [bounty’s programs funded by Federal funds.
