lime and fertilizer has been applied, and the land has not been overgrazed. Crops have been rotated and raised in a manner which keeps erosion to a minimum.
Most level land has tile and open ditch drainage to make it suitable for cropping and on the steeper land, row crops are planted on contour strips with proper rotation of corn, small grain and hay. Mr. Kilby was one of the first farmers to use hybrid seed corn, and one of the first to use different amounts and analysis of fertilizer for different crops. He produced over 100 bushels of corn per acre when 40 or 50 bushels per acre was considered good.
Mr. Kilby is living proof that conservation will aid those who practice it.
Mental Health Assoc. Meeting Oct. 22
Dr. R. W. Garnett, Jr. will be the principal speaker at the first meeting of the Rappahannock Mental Health Association which is scheduled for Thursday, October 22. The meeting will convene at 8 p.m. in the auditorium of Rappahannock County Elementary School, Washington,' Va. Dr. Garnett’s topic will be “Mental Health as a Community Service.” Rappahannock is associated with Culpeper County in a Mental Health Clinic which is conducted by a team of doctors and social workers a half day each week. The public is urged to attend the first county meeting of the Mental Health Association and participate in its wdrk where possible.

Watchdog Award
Sen. Harry F. Byrd, Jr., was among the 23 members of the U. S. Senate to receive a "Watchdog of the Treasury" award given this year by the National Associated Businessmen. The NAB. a small businessmen's organization, gives these awards every other year to Senators and Representatives who vote for economy 75rt of the time, according to this group’s rating system. The symbol is a golden bulldog. The award was made on the basis of 12 economy votes and this is the third miniature watchdog Sen. Byrd has been presented.
