The hazardous icy roads in Rappahannock during Thanksgiving eve, the result of 6 to 14 inches of snow in various parts of the county, caused minor wrecks.
About 11:30 a.m. Wednesday night a mile east of Sperryville on Route 522, a 70 Volkswagen operated by Jerry Willis Alexander of Lignum, struck a rail fence. The VW skidded on the ice, ran off the right of the road and struck the fence, according to Trooper W. A. Buntin who investigated. Alexander was taken to Culpeper Memorial Hospital where he was treated for a sprained neck and released.
Damage to the vehicle was estimated at $600.
In the afternoon on Route 211 east of Washington of 67 Plymouth and a 70 Ford were invovled in a collision. Lois Ann Murray of Etlan in the Plymouth was slowing on the icy road and was rammed from the rear by the Ford operated by Emilie Vara Schutte of Crownsville, Md. Damage to the vehicles were estimated at $150 and $700 of the Plymouth and Ford, respectively.
A single vehicle crash was reported on the 27th at 8:40 a.m. on Route 211 two and a half miles west of Amissville. Murray Graham Brown jr. of Quantico skidded on the icy road and struck a guard rail. Damage to his 71 Chevrolet was set at $300, according to Trooper Buntin.
At least three crashes with slight damage too minor for reporting occurred during the storm Wednesday night Route 211 from the four line section to the trailer court east of Amissville was blocked by vehicles which could not navigate the hills or had skidded out of manueverability, said Mr. Buntin.
