amount of enthusiasm for basketball. After working with the local boys throughout the fall conditioning program and into the practice time for the season, Coach Ellis says that this will be a building year. However, it is expected that several games will be won by the Panthers. Among the new things the fans can expect to see this year is a more controlled style of play with a disciplined offense and defense. Since it is a building year, the younger boys, sophomores and juniors, will be seeing lots of action. Returnees from last vear’s Panthers include Sophomore Harry Jordan, an all-district honorable-mention last year. Seniors Bill Kilby, Lawrence Turner, and Ronnie “Pearl” Myers. Clifford Frye, Steve Leake, Bobby Smoot and Ed Williams, up from last year’s junior varsity team, should add support to the effort. Dean Hahn is coaching the junior varsity team this year. He also has the J.V.’s loaded with young talent, leaning toward the eighth and ninth grades for most of his players.
Helping with the basketball program this year are Jerry Campbell, a teacher at the elementary school and Julian Brown. Both of these men are donating their time and efforts to help improve the overall basketball program -at R.C.H.S.
The new gymnasium floor is a beautiful and helpful addition to the overall athletic program. The maple-strip floor, with some amount of “give”, should help the players stay healthy and probably jump higher, too.
New attractive uniforms for the varsity to wear at away games have arrived and should contribute greatly to the new appearance of the team.
Some policies established by R.C.H.S. to help insure that athletic contests go smoothly and safely in a sportsmanlike manner are:
