Varner of Woodville, 84, has had a colorful career which includes everything from blacksmithing to playing the slide trombone in a band. He has worked in a powder mill, been an electric lineman, watchmaker and repairman and a farmer, which he still is. He lives in his white framehouse surrounded by rolling hills and enjoys the panoramic scenery after retiring from most activities. Now he is enjoying a little leisure which has been impossible during his busy years. His musical career was with a Culpeper band which played for public functions as fairs and especially for real estate auctions. When the bidding slowed up, he said they struck up another tune. He was recently awarded a 50-year Masonic pin.
