Huge barn among fire
losses at South Wales
TWO STRUCTURES, including a three-story barn, were destroyed by fire early last Saturday morning on the South Wales Golf Course property in Culpeper County. The fire originated in the barn, containing new cut hay, and spread to an unoccupied two-story house about 15 feet away. An automobile, farm tractor and a wagonload of hay were also destroyed. Cause of the fire has not been determined, but Chief C.M. Seale, of the Culpeper Volunteer Fire Department, said that lightning which accompanied a storm earlier in the night may have struck the barn. The barn was completely destroyed. The fire broke out at about 3:45 a.m. and some 60 firemen from volunteer fire departments of Warrenton, Amissville, Remington, Brandy and Culpeper responded to the call. . Some 11 pieces of apparatus were used in fighting the flames. Firemen remained on the scene until about 8 a.m. Saturday. Seale said he could not give an estimate of damage pending further investigation.
