Instead, an extracted fox scent was soaked into a burlap bag and dragged across a two to three mile course. After the scent was laid, three dogs were turned loose to pick it up. Moments later, the pack was released and the mad^scramble for the lead position was on.

For a hound to win the fox drag race — as it is called — he must score points in front of judges who ^sire mounted and on foot throughout the course. This is done in the following manner:

A hound in the lead gets points; if he is barking he gets additional points; if he is in the lead and not barking, the hounds behind get points if they are barking; and the first hound to the finish receives points.
