Through the efforts of members of Virginia Lions Clubs, the file of eye donors registered with the Old Dominion Eye Bank will soon number more than 50,000 names.
R. Kenneth Hudgins, Executive Director of Old Dominion Eye Bank, reports that solicitation of Virginians to participate in the eye donor program has been greatly expanded by Lions Clubs throughout the state and that names of new donors are now being added to the eye bank’s files at the rate of several thousand each year.
Even so, said Hudgins, the need for additional donors is far greater than ever before. Sight-restoring corneal transplant operations, he said, have become much more commonplace in recent years because of great advances in surgical techniques.
