The age composition oi the bear population is the first piece of information that researchers plan to nail down and hunters are being furnished with special envelopes in which to place a portion of the lower jaw of bears killed. By examining cross-sections of teeth from these jaws, biologists can accurately determine the bears’ age much the same as the age of a tree can be determined from counting the rings on the stump.
