‘Too many ..
SOMETIMES—not often, but sometimes—editorials “write themselves.” Newspapermen are fond of saying so, at any rate. What they really mean is that someone else expressed something so well that it can’t be improved upon, even by an editorial writer.
What follows is an editorial which “wrote itself,” being the opening paragraph of the “Truban Report,” a rundown on matters before the General Assembly written by State Senator William A. Truban of Woodstock, who represents the 27th District:
“Too many luncheons...Too many dinners...Too many cocktail parties beforehand... Too many parties after the parties...Too many bills, so many that they can’t even write them in time to consider...Too many liberal de-gooders...Too many shdrfsessions in some cases, so they can run to another\ social event. Too much monkey business! and not enough cash register business.
“Last year, and in all of the Holton years, most parties Were outlawed for Legislators. Not this time; everybody who has an idea (and all seem to be able to afford it) throws another big one—most with plenty of booze—and all expect us to go to those well-oiled events!
“But for your 27th District Legislator and many dedicated Legislators, the lights burn late in the Eighth Street Office Building in Richmond, if only to handle paper. You can call me here late at night, if you need to.”
