TOTAL farms by the end of 1973 was 2,821,000-one percent less than in 1972— and they cover almost one billion 87 million acres of the Nation’s land.
Although the loss of farmland to other uses is fractional—three-tenths of one percent—it totaled over 2-1/2 million acres in 1973. This is an area twice the size of the State of Delaware. In 1971, farmland lost to other uses totaled 3.5 million acres, in 1972 the figure was 3.2 million acres.
York said the report indicates that while all individual yearly losses in farmland represent only a very small part of the total, there is some concern about the long-term impact of the losses.□
