THE number'of farms declined one percent across the nation during 1973, while the average size of the American farm became two acres larger, according to Jack York, executive director of the Loudoun Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service (ASCS).
York said that in Virginia the decline was 1,000 farms during 1973. Farm size averaged 152 acres in the State.
The 1973 figures were recently released by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Washington.
York indicated that the national figures mean that some farmers added new acres to their operations last year. These farmers are following a trend that started almost four decades ago—a trend to fewer but larger farms. The average farm is now 385 acres, two acres larger than last year.
