FIGURES released by Supervising Game Biologist Joe L. Coggin show the preliminary results of the deer harvest for the areas west of the Blue Ridge to be up by 9.5% over a year ago. In all the total legal western deer ^ kill was 16,454 of which 3,897 (28.3%) were doe and 12,575 were buck deer.
Sportsmen using bow and arrows accounted for 435 of the deer taken with this figure representing aT9.3% increase over the past season. Coggin stated that there were a higher number of spike bucks taken as had been anticipated. This was due to the poor selection of mast available to wildlife during the previous year.
