This letter is written in response to your article in the “Rappahannock News’’ of May 2, 1974 concerning the total tree harvester and Drott cutter which is presently operating on Long Mountain. This machine, according to Ed Maddox, Wood Procurement Manager for the West Virginia Pulp and Paper mill at Covington, will revolutionalize the logging industry.
Basically, the logging industry has seen little major changes in its operation during the past 100 years except for the chain saw which got its hold in the industry in the early ‘50’s. If Paul Bunyun could visit a logging operation today, he would have little trouble getting the hang of the operations since the operation is basically the same as it was in his day. Few other industries could claim such a statement.
This total tree harvester greatly reduces the labor involved in harvesting and will require a great deal of wood to keep in operation. However, this method of logging has its advantages over past methods from the ecology standpoint. This type of logging will greatly reduce the erosion possibility and greatly increase the utilization of the forest since the entire tree is used.
