leaving the top of the tree in the woods. The log was then skedded to the log landing. The back end of the logwould dig into the soil; at times deep ruts would be carved into the soil, causing erosion. Since the total tree harvester chips the entire tree, the top of the tree is left intact; the leaves or needles from the tree top acts as a cushion for the soil while the skidder is moving the timber to the log landing. The entire top feathers out over the ground only disturbing the leaves and a little soil.
Very little damage is caused to the soil by this skidding method.
One great objection many people have had of logging operations in the past has been the mess the loggers leave after they have finished. The outstanding part about this total tree harvester is that very little debris is left in the woods, This machine will increase the productivity and yield of the forest in a pulpwood harvest by 10% to 60%.
From a forestry standpoint, the total tree harvester greatly reduces the cost of preparing an area for replanting. Once this logging operation has finished, the area is ready for planting. Too ofter in previous type logging operations, a considerable amount of debris and standing trees were left. Many times the trees that were left were of little or no value to the cutter and too oftern were of little value to the landowner for a future forest.
