Virginia prides itself on its natural beauty, an asset stressed in urging travelers to come here. Do we want those visitors to see and enjoy our natural beauty or do we want them to encounter monstrous commercial billboards? W,e’d opt for the unspoiled countryside and we suspect our visitors would, too.
The motorist, if he needs to, can learn about the motel and restaurant from the food and lodging signs erected by the state at the Va. 3 interchange.
City Council is involved in the matter because the land in question is owned by the city. Silver has asked the city to rent him the land, without competitive bidding, for a mere $600 a yearless than $2 a day. The city attorney says bids are necessary.
Whether the rent is $600 or $6,000, though, we think the billboard proposal is unwise. It should be laid to rest tonight.
