TUESDAY’S EARLY MORNING frost has to be one of the earliest on record. Miss Ruby’s official weather gauge registered a low of 31 degrees in the town of Washington. Probably it was several degrees colder on the bottoms and low lying areas.
The early cold snap brings to mind a few of the fall and winter jobs and activities you may want to consider. Wheat should be seeded anytime from now to October 25. Over the years one of the main reasons for poor stands of wheat has been seeding too late, so the sooner you can get this job done the better. Recommended varieties are Arthur, Abe, Coker 68-15 and Blue Boy.
Early October is also the time to treat for cattle grub or ox warble. Use either the pour on or spray methods. Any of the recommended materials will do the job provided the directions are followed.
There is still time to seed fescue if you get it done within the next two weeks. I have seen successful stands established as late as the first of November. Of course the later you wait the greater the risk of failure. Fall and early winter are also the ideal time to fertilize permanent pastures and lawns.
