MAMA USED TO SAY: “Don’t cry over spilt milk.” At this time and the price of milk, it seems appropriate to cry, even if you spill a little. But we are not thinking of “spilt milk” in a literal sense, we are thinking of autumn and summer gone. Summer, what is a “summer bonus,” a summer romance? A few days ago I heard a gentleman telling us of the expense of operating kindergartens; it costs millions. But here is the rub: a pupil in the third grade and beyond does not benefit, scholastically, over the pupil who did not attend kindergarten. Why kindergarten? Why not let a child be a child as long as it can. I read a psychological report some time ago that accused parents of trying to force maturity on their children before they are ready, that mothers are having their daughters wear training garments before they have anything to train.

Attrition: Wearing away. ‘Fraid I’m being worn away faster than some of the unfavorable aspects of life. A running mate used to say that “attrition will take care of it” referring to some irritations we had to endure. Do you think that we will have beer drinkers, like the poor, with us always? I’m not a chemist, but I’m trying to think of a formula that will make beer cans disintegrate. But the formula works this way—the first can and the second disappear, the third makes the drinker disappear. I may try one where the first can is effective, that is if thrown from a car. If you see any driverless cars on the" road you will know I have realized my ambition.□
