THIS newspaper has expressed before its appreciation of the leading industry in Rappahannock County — and throughout the Piedmont, for that matter. We’d much rather see Rappahannbck and all area counties concentrate on enhancing the desirable, lively agricultural industry they already have, than to tinker with cockeyed, “modern” notions of going all out to attract “industry” of the manufacturing, or “research and development” kind. Agriculture is traditionally, and soundly, the basis of our rural society, and we’d be risking some unpleasant consequencies to pursue policies that might weaken that base.
To this end, we call attention to a recent column in The Washington Post by George F. Will, in which he stated: “Agriculture is the most important and least understood of the world’s major industries. Indeed, the measure of the general ignorance about agriculture is the fact that many
