COMPARED TO LAST YEAR’S PRICES, this fall’s opening area feeder cattle sales were an utter disaster. However, compared to the current market they were good strong successful sales. Prices received were well above feeder prices in Oklahoma, the Range States, the Deep South, current feeder futures, and area weekly auction markets.
Average sales prices don’t concern me very much, as sale averages are often influenced by factors such as weight, percent heifers, percent shorts, percent choice, etc. Price comparisons should be made on what the bulk of feeders sold for at a particular weight and grade. The following is a summary of last Thursday’s Culpeper Area Feeder Calf Sale, in which many Rappahannock feeder calves were sold.
