Nine-year-old Jennings Stuart Webb Jr. had left from his home with the defendant on the defendant’s motorcycle early in the afternoon of July 31. They had told young Webb’s father they were going to the house of a friend. Webb began to look for his son shortly before 3 o’clock that afternoon. As he questioned area residents, he found out the two boys had never visited the friend. At one point during the search, Webb saw the defendant with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Kirkwood Burke, near a house the Burkes' were visiting. Webb said the defendant told him he hadn’t seen the missing boy since 1 p.m.
