Rappahannock County High School reached the state baseball finals for the first time in the school’s history by beating Rappahannock of Warsaw High School 4-2 last Tuesday night. The Panthers coasted to victory on a standout performance by Mike Smoot backed by the best defensive game the team has put together all year.
Smoot hit a home run, drove in all four Rappahannock runs and overpowered the opposing batters. “I have always talked about and stressed team play,” said Rappahannock coach Preston Douglas. “But in Mike’s case, you can’t. He is just a super player. He did it for us.”
Smoot reached base every time up. He drove in the game’s first run with a squeeze bunt and beat the throw to first. Dale Frye, who had reached base on an error, scored from third on the play.
With seven strikeouts, Smoot retired the first nine batters he faced. He gave up two runs and allowed four scattered hits in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. But he twice retired the Warsaw team with men on base to maintain the Panther’s lead.
“He was just overpowering and really dominated the beginning of the game,” said coach Douglas. “He lost a little concentration in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings but came on strong in the last inning. He was just leaning back, firing and overpowering them. ’ ’
