but this newspaper was not told that the meeting was being held. We rather suspect that the citizens who are interested in this matter weren’t told, either.
PUBLIC officials have been known to complain about “citizen apathy,” and they like to point out how few people turn out for hearings and other occasions for public comment. A lot of what they say is correct, but people sure can’t be expected to attend a meeting if they don’t even know a meeting is being held.
And maybe they’re apathetic—if that is quite the right word—about local government because they suspect that what they want or think about something isn’t of much consequence to the local officials, anyway. It has been our observation, frequently confirmed, that their suspicions are correct. □

To qualify for the honor of being placed on the Dean’s List, a student must have a gradepoint average of at least 3.25 and carry a course load of at least 14 hours.
