LAND planning is something like managing a baseball team or editing a newspaper— everybody thinks he knows how to do it better than the person actually doing it. At least, the noise generated at public hearings for this or that development, re-zoning or planning guide indicate that this is a strongly held belief, shared by many people.
A good example is currently being provided by our neighbor, Fauquier County (and it is always good for us to keep our eyes on what’s going on with our neighbors; many of the problems they’re grappling with today could be our problems of tomorrow, and how they deal with these problems could provide us with valuable clues for avoiding damaging mistakes).
Fauquier’i planning staff has presented some innovative proposals for revising their county’s master plan, a document whose reputation has, frankly, exceded its content but which, nevertheless, has served as something of a rallying point for many efforts to save this beautiful rural area from the more blatant excesses of urban expansion which have ruined so many acres just to the East of Fauquier.
