Traffic deaths

Virginia’s traffic deaths for the first six months of the year stood at 456, or ten less than for the same period of 1975, says Colonel H. W. Burgess, Superintendent of State Police. At the same time Colonel Burgess noted that late reports and deaths of persons now carried as injured are certain to make the reduction even slimmer.
“There have been five occasions when we have achieved three consecutive years of traffic death reduction and 1973, 1974 and 1975 formed the latest. We have never seen four consecutive ones but in spite of our narrow margin we still have a good chance this year,” he said.
Pedestrian deaths were up from 65 to 78, deaths of servicemen from 15 to 16 and deaths of motorcyclists from 20 to 24. Deaths of bicyclists dropped from five to four. Traffic volumes were 9.1 percent above those for the first half of 1975.
