CITIZENS of Sperryville will be given an opportunity to state their views on what type of sewage system they prefer at a public hearing scheduled for 8 p.m. on July 30 at the Sperryville fire house.
Water and Sewer Authority Chairman Col. M. F. Biddle said he had received a verbal report from McCaffrey Engineering on the results of their study and expected the report in writing by the end of the week. According to Biddle, there are two possible methods of providing a system for Sperryville—either a sewage treatment plant or a town drainfield. “Which one is used will be dependent oncost,” said Biddle.
He estimated monthly user costs for the treatment plant at approximately $10.60 per month. Estimated monthly user costs for a drainage field were considerably less at approximately $3.50. The higher costs involved with the treatment plant are the result of having to hire people to operate die facility, said Biddle.
“We are attempting to get grants from the Federal government (EPA and HUD) and the state to cover the costs of hook-on and construction,” said Biddle. He hopes that it will be possible to secure rent subsidy loans for the property owners whose houses are still served by pit privies. There are 27 privies in Sperryville. The loans would cover die costs of indoor installation.
