MANAGING FESCUE FOR WINTER GRAZING: Late July is the critical time in managing established tall fescue for winter grazing. Graze or mow fescue down to 2-3” by early August. Overgrazing slows recovery growth while undergrazing allows low quality growth to carry over into winter. Top dress with 70-80 lbs. of nitrogen per acre about the first of August. This is also a good time to apply phosphate, potash and lime as needed according to soil tests. In the absence of a soil test, apply 40-60 lbs. each of P2 05 and K20 per acre. Do not permit the Ph to fall below 6.0. The amount of nitrogen may be reduced if an excellent stand of clover is present. Keep livestock off this pasture until the fall growth of other pastures is grazed (usually November or December), then turn cows on the tall fescue. Where practical, it is desirable to stock heavily enough (4-5 cows/acre) to graze a particular area down, then rotate the cows to a new area.

BEAN PROBLEMS: We have received a larger number of calls on string bean disease in vegetable gardens. Probably 60 to 70% of the beans I have looked at have had Bean Mosaic Virus. The symptoms range from puckering of the leaf to leaf mottling, and elongation; pod, leaf and petiole distortion; to dwarfing of a few leaves or the entire plant. Once beans become infected, there is no control for the virus. This disease is transmitted by insects or through the infected seed. The disease is not soil borne, but can over winter on old plant material left in the garden. For control next year, buy bean seed grown by certified producers from the drier areas of the Western States. □
