The 10th annual Rappahannock Relay for Life will be held May 17-18 at the Rappahannock County Elementary School. For many years the focus of Relay for Life has been celebrating the lives of both those who have survived can-' cer and those who have not. Each year cancer survivors in our community have walked, run, or propelled their wheelchairs around the first tap of the Relay in celebration of their victory against cancer. Later in the evening, the luminary ceremony also honored cancer survivors but. more importantly, remembered those who lost their battle against cancer. We will do all that again this year but we have, added a new force: fighting back. The purpose of this new focus is to show us all how to change behaviors that lead to cancer and to encourage us to volunteer and take action to fight cancer year-round.
Relay for Life is a national fund raiser of the American Cancer Society which allocates about 40 percent of its funds to cancer research and another 40 percent to advocacy, education and service. The
