The use of steroids in the racing industry has come under increased scrutiny of late, particularly in light of Big Brown’s surprising Triple Crown loss in which his trainer publicly stated that the colt had been taken off regular steroid injections.
“It’s really unavoidable at this stage said NBAs director of racing Bill Gallo. “With all that is going on in the world of Thoroughbred racing, we just folt the need to follow suit and be proactive. The rules are based on the MidAtlantic guidelines, and when they made the move we felt it was the right thing to do and follow them. We actually use the same testing lab as Delaware Park and we typically follow their lead, so this made a lot of sense."
