CREMATION
While cremation is a widely accepted practice in many parts of die world, it has been viewed with more skepticism in this country. Much of this reluctance can be traced to early Christian funeral practices. which generally regarded cremation as an affront to the hope of the resurrection of the body. This notion is largely based on the Jewish precedent of the earth burial (including Jesus' own entombment) and Greek notions of liberation of the soul from the body. This anti-cremation stance hardened into doctrine and was enshrined in liturgy and canon law. Today, however, most Christians now regard cremation as an alternative to earth burial. This changing stance reflects evolving ideas about death and adapting American lifestyles.
