It was a nail-biting finish Tuesday night in the Olympic three-day event finals, as American Gina Miles moved up to claim individual silver, the only U.S. medal. The lengthy show jumping course scrambled the overnight leaderboard, but German Hinrich Romeike held on for individual gold as well as adding to Germany’s team gold total.
With less than two points separating the top four riders. Miles put in a pair of double-clear rounds with McKinlaigh to rise from fourth to second. This was the 34-year-old mother and California housewife’s first time to ride in the Olympics; she was on the gold medal team at last summer's Pan Am Games in Brazil.
Germany .finished on 166.10 penalties to win the first Olympic gold medal handed out in Hong Kong. Australia finished second on 171.20 points, with Great Britain for bronze at 185.70.
Hinrich Romeike of Germany, riding Marius, won individual gold. Kristina Cook of Great Britain, riding Miners Frolic, won bronze on 57.40 points.
Dentist Romeike, 45, of Germany and his grey 14year-old Holsteiner gelding Marius were fifth individually in Athens.
The team victory holds special meaning for the Germans who were stripped of team gold in Athens in 2004 after Bettina Hoy had a technical refusal on the show jumping phase.
Teams competed over a course of 13 jumping efforts with a time of 94 seconds. The time was little issue for the top 25 riders, though Monday’s cross-country course was judged to be ‘‘tiring’’ by many riders who found the undulating Beas River golf course route difficult to find a rhythm.
