Dr. Robert Chappell, superintendent of Rappahannock County public schools, calls them “fine replacements for those who have resigned or retired.”
The new teachers and staff members include a 21-year Navy Chief Petty Officer who was an enlisted aide to the Chief of Naval Operations, a physical education coach who ran a successful program in a high school for incarcerated juveniles and a music teacher who was the drum major of James Madison University's marching band.
There are teachers who have worked in Africa and another who studied at Oxford University, and a group of new college graduates eager to try their skills.
