in# the wave of destruction caused by the 2005 storms, so these shelters are severely overloaded. To make mutters worse, the shelters are in significant disrepair because the financial strain in the region has forced the postponement of many planned remodeling and building prqjects.
My family and I joined a group of about 20 people who spent a day of cleuning and repair at the St. John the Baptist Animal Shelter. The beleaguered facility is the temporary home for some 15 dogs, 25 cats, and three very tired shelter workers. Holly, my wife, spent the day cleaning and caring for the many feline patients housed in a small temporary trailer and I rebuilt the kennel fencing that had become worn and dangerous. In the meuntime, our children Emily and Jack saw to it that every dog got a bath, lots of TLC and a walk or two before the day was over. It was a pleasure to be part of a project that gave hope and encouragement to people and animals who, after three years, are still struggling with the effects of the hurricanes of‘06.
