THE OLD ACADEMY in Washington, called the “Rabbit Gum” by affectionate students because of its resemblance to a rabbit box. was one of the first public schools in Rappahannock County. Located at the end of Gay Street in Washington, the little two-room brick school taught local children until the new Washington School opened in t9Q7 on Mt. Salem Avenue. This photo ran in the January 27, t983 edition of the Rappahannock News. Rabbit Gum is now owned by Diane Bruce, clerk of the Rappahannock County Circuit Court
