“The Academy” at Washington was more than just a school of readinV ’ritin’, and 'rithmetic to several generations of Rappahannock citizens who are now located the country over from California to Maine and if’Iorida. ~ ,

Established with Virginia’s opening of the public sehool system in 1871, The Academy served as the sole educational center until the present building was erected in 1M6... ^ ..

Besides a center of learning, it served as the town hall where dances, lectures, and parties of all kinds took place. It served as a place for prayer meetings, professor Carver used to teach dancing lessons at The Academy, and when occasions arose for a dance to be held, the chandeliers from the Masonic hall-were borrowed to light the rooms. »
