*4At one time on\y reading! writing, and arithmetic were taught, but later Latin was added to the curricula. John S. Gibson, W, L. Jett, W. W. Moffett (later a judge) , and a Mr. Warden were some of the teachers in this school.
“Some of the old students say that at Christmas Eve if the teacher would not give, them a holiday on Christmas, they would put the teachers out of school and lock the doors. They also tell of the many whippings they got for what now seems no reason.

If the timbers and bricks which compose the structure of The Academy could speak, what a series fo events they could relate in the history of this school which left its imprints on its students who, when they went out from its doors, have ranked as some of the finest citizens in our nation.
The Washington High School which assumed the continuation of the town’s educational system of today when free education xame into existence in the town, was built in 1808. The building is yellow stucco, has 14 rooms end 14 teachers in comparison with the two teachers who taught in the academy. This new high school has a modern library, an auditorium, a gym, amid .S modern heating system. There is an agriculture building and the school cafeteria serves an average of 1&5 pupils daily. ^ Shades of The Academy t But for fear sonie of the younger generation may become inclined toward a feeling of superiority • because of their fine building and xcellent educational advantages,v the suggestion is hereby offered that a 18-year old pupil be handed a copy of MoGuffey’e Fifth and a photographer shall be present to record the consternation stamped upon his countenance.
