It seems necessary to keep ri pea ting that the name of Wedgwood contains only one -“e”. The las'member of th^. familj^o spell his name with two e’s was Ste1135.
The Wedgwoods are a Staffordshire family, where pottery has beeh made since Roman titles. The first Wedgwood potter was Gilbert (1588-1678). The next three generations were Thomas by name and they carried the family trade of pottery down to 1739. The family’s chief claim to fame was Josiah Wedgwood,, 1730 to 1795.
The contributions of Josiah Wedgwood to the ceramic field revolutionized the industry and our' eating habits. As Gladstone said, ‘‘■he converted a rude and inconsiderable handcraft into an elegant art. .and an important part*, of national commerce.” He opened a new field with white clay for a new ware which might be used not only by the rich, who could afford porcelain, but by the middle and lower classes. Hie put dinnerware on the tables of the western world much as Henry Ford put a car in every garage.
